Seafood Marketing is responsible for the organisation of the ‘Young Seafood Chef of the Year’ Competition. The aim of the competition is to promote the quality and freshness of seafood, encourage young chefs to experiment with seafood and include it on their menus and in doing so encourage cross-border and cross-community co-operation.

The competition is open to chefs aged 23 and under from Northern Ireland and the six border counties of the Republic of Ireland (Louth, Monaghan, Sligo, Cavan, Leitrim and Donegal) who are currently working full time in college or industry.

Their task is to devise a Seafood menu for two people consisting of a Seafood starter and a Seafood main course with suggested accompanying wines. Contestants are challenged to use local Seafood fresh from the Irish sea and in season at the time of the competition.

The deadline for entering this years competition is 20th September and it will be judged by an industry panel consisting of: Sean Owens (Gardiner’s Restaurant, Magherafelt, Bob Mc Donald, NIACC, Brendan O’ Neill, Panel of Chefs, Neven Maguire, Mac Neans House Bistro, and Dennis Broderick, Direct Wine Shipments)

The judges will select 12 finalists to go head to head at the cook-off in Newry City Institute on Tuesday 12th October. Finalists will not only be vying for the coveted title ‘ Young Seafood Chef of the Year’ but for the opportunity to win 1st prize, a five-day residential course at the Rick Stein Seafood School in Cornwall. Second and third prizes are collections of state-of-the–art catering equipment

Last years winner Glen Mc Fadyen from Castleleslie in County Monaghan found that his experience at Padstow has instilled a passion for cooking seafood. Commenting on his experience Glen encouraged all young chefs to enter:

“ The week totally changed my attitude to seafood. The freshness and variety was second to none and the whole experience was fantastic. Winning the competition has opened many doors for me in the industry”.
