The Fleet At the end of 2002 the Northern Ireland fleet comprised of some 155 fishing vessels over 10 metres in length and 170 vessels of 10 metres and under in length.

Quotas / Total Allowable Catches Under the Common Fisheries Policy, Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for some 54 species of fish within different areas of the sea, are shared out on a quota basis amongst the Member States which have historically fished for those species. In the Irish Sea the United Kingdom's 2000 quotas for the species of main interest to the Northern Ireland fleet (quota incorporated in UK quota) are set out below.

Since 1991 there have been many reductions in the quotas for the Irish Sea. Any reduction in raw materials supply will have a major impact on the processing sector and is monitored closely. In this respect NI Seafood supports the NI Producer Organisations in their lobbying role.
